Cliff Jumping at Sand Hollow

Cliff jumping had been high on my to-do list this summer. When I was planning my summer road trip, I made sure to look for good spots along the way. My first destination was Zion National Park in Utah. I was curious to see if there were any good spots in within the park. I began my research and couldn’t find any good spots there; however, I did find a place nearby and it was along the way. I found some videos on YouTube of a place called Sand Hollow. It looked great, but the video was a bit dated and I wasn’t sure if the water was still deep enough. I then realized I could search Instagram for recent posts. I typed #SandHollow into the search bar and found some cool videos of people plunging into the lake just hours before I’d hit the search button. I couldn’t wait to get there!

My nephew and I made it to the reservoir at about 3pm on the first day of our road trip. Needless to say, we had a great time! I did get a little beat up though. I had learned to front flip while in Guatemala almost a year before and hadn’t been cliff jumping since. I tried one on my first jump and put a little too much spin on it. Ouch! After shaking off that front flop, I was back at it. I had never done a “gainer” before (forward facing back flip) and was set on trying one. I convinced myself not to leave the lake until I had it down. I’m happy to say I can finally do a gainer!

If you ever get the chance, you should definitely check this place out. Also, I learned the best way to find good cliffs that are currently safe to jump from (always check the depth when you arrive, even if someone else jumped it recently) is by searching Instagram hash tags. Type in #CliffJumping into the search bar and scroll through posts until you find a good spot that you’d like to visit.

CAUTION: If you ever find yourself standing on the edge on a cliff overlooking water that might not be deep enough, DON’T JUMP! Cliff jumping is dangerous and can cause lifelong injuries if you don’t take proper precautions.
